BIOGRAPHY
Definition
Biographical
recount is a text which has a purpose to retell the event of famous person’s
life. A detailed description or account of a person’s life and written by
someone else, it is nonfiction text.
Purpose
To know a
person’s story about his/her life outside of any accomplishments this
person may be known for.
To give
many information easily and educate the readers.
Characteristics
Biography
is not written by subject and always written in third person.
Based on
research.
Describes
the person’s surroundings (where, when and how the person lived).
Use vivid
language to narrate events.
Generic Structure
Orientation (Introduction)
It is the
opening paragraph, gives the readers the background information of the person. Usually
contains narrated biodata such as full name, place and date of birth. The
initial part usually includes background.
Events
In
events, should be chronological order. This stage is part of the events
experienced by the character. Contains an explanation of a story in the form of
problem solving, career processes, and various events that have been
experienced by the character to lead him to a success.
Re-Orientation (Closing)
It
consist of conclusion or a comment or the writer. Tell about the echievement or
the contribution of the person. This reorientation is optional, so it can be
present or not.
Grammar and language features
Use of simple past tense
A simple
form of an event that happened in the past. Using the second verb form
Temporal sequence and temporal conjunction. As a liaison between one sentence with another sentence in the order
of time.
Focus on Specific participants
Use of
Action verbs. group of words that describe something the character is actively
doing. e.g. : the family then moved to his stepfather's home country.

Biography of
Sukarno, Indonesian First President |

Sukarno was the first president of Indonesia. He was born in 6 June
1901 and died in 21 June 1970. He led his country to fight against
Netherlands and the man who proclaimed the independence. Sukarno was a
prominent leader of nationalist movement during the colonial period. He spent
more than a decade under the detention before released by the Japanese force. |

Ir. Sukarno and all his nationalist fellows collaborated to collect
support in spreading nationalist ideas. When Japan surrender the Indonesian
independence was declared by Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta on 17 August 1945. At
the same time, Sukarno was appointed as the president and Mohammad Hatta as
vice president. After became president, Sukarno had to fight once again
against resisting Dutch re-colonization efforts. |

After parliamentary democracy chaos in 1957, Sukarno put an
autocratic system called Guided Democracy. It successfully ended the
rebellions and instability which were threatening the country. In the early
1960s, Sukarno brought the country to the Soviet by giving protection and
support to the Indonesian Communist Party. |

Unfortunately, the 30 September movement in 1965 ended the communist
era and Sukarno’s position as president was replaced by Suharto, the man who
became president for 32 years. After Suharto in charged, Sukarno was exiled
to Bogor and spent the rest of his life there. |

Reza
Rahadian Matulessy, known as Reza Rahadian, was born in Bogor, March 5, 1987.
He is the son of Mr. Rahim and Mrs. Pratiwi Widantini Matulessy, the name
Rahadian is a combination of his parents' names which means child of Rahim and
Dian.
His
childhood was spent in 3 cities. With my mother, since living at my
grandmother's house in the Gadog area, Bogor. However, his parents have been
divorced since he was 6 months old. Although since childhood he only grew up
with his mother, he never lost his father figure.
Reza
Rahardian started his career in 2004 by starring in a soap opera titled Inikah
Rasa, a production of Rapi Films. Then, his debut as a film star began in 2007
by starring in a film called Horror. After that, his career began to soar by
winning various awards. In 2010, Reza Rahadian won the Citra Cup again for his
acting in the film 3 Hati Dua Continents, Satu Cinta.
Until now
in 2021, there have been four Citra Cups that he got from the Indonesian Film
Festival. Of course it is a proper appreciation for the journey of his career so
far.
Successfully
becoming a film star, he spread his wings to become a director. Reza has also
served as a player and director in the miniseries Temporary Forever in 2020.

Alexander
Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 3, 1847. Bell's father
named Alexander Melville Bell is a professor at the University of Edinburgh and
his mother, Eliza Grace Symonds, is a famous pianist despite being deaf. Bell
also had two brothers, namely Edward Charles Bell and Melville James Bell, but
they died when Bell was 20 years old due to tuberculosis.
Bell is a
highly intellectual child who wants to learn the piano. Bell did not excel
academically. Since childhood, he studied homeschooling. However, from an early
age, Bell always solved problems. When he was 12 years old, Bell invented a
rotating oar device and a nail brush that could separate the husks and seeds of
wheat to improve farming processes. At the age of 16 Bell began to study the
mechanics of speech. He continued his education at the Royal High School and
the University of Edinburgh. In 1870, he and his family moved to Canada. The
following year, Bell settled in the United States. In the United States, Bell
followed his father to teach deaf children. In 1872, Bell opened the Boston
School of Vocal Physiology and Mechanics of Speech, where deaf people were
taught to speak. At the age of 26 he became Professor of Vocal and Elocution Physiology
at the Boston University School of Oratory.
In 1871,
Bell worked also at the telegraph office. A device that sends messages over the
cable at the same time. The technology was backed by a group of investors and
he started looking for a way to transmit the human voice over wires. In 1875,
together with his friend Thomas Watson, he began converting electricity into
sound. He got his patent on March 7, 1876.
In just
seven months, Bell and his wife had sold most of their stock at an average
price of $250 per share. In the following November the price had shot up to
$1000 per share. In 1881 they rashly sold another third of the remaining shares
they owned. Even so, by 1883 they had made a profit of about a million dollars.

General Sudirman
was a high ranking Indonesian military officer during the Indonesian national
revolution. He was the first commander-in-chief of the Indonesian Armed Forces,
he continues to be widely respected in the country. On 12 November 1945, at an
election to decide the military’s commander-in-chief in YogyakartA. The 24
years old Sudirman was chosen over Oerip Soemohardjo in a close votE. While
waiting to be confirmed, Sudirman ordered an assault on British and Dutch
forces in AmbarawA. The ensuing battle and British withdrawal strengthened
Sudirman’s popular support, and he was ultimately confirmed on 18 December.
General Sudirman commanded military activities throughout Java, including a
show of force in Yogyakarta on 1 March 1949. When the Dutch began withdrawing,
in July 1949 Sudirman was recalled to Yogyakarta and forbidden to fight
further. In late 1949 Sudirman’s tuberculosis returned, and he retired to
Magelang, where he died slightly more than a month after the Dutch recognised
Indonesia’s independencE. He is buried at Semaki Heroes’ Cemetery in
Yogyakarta.

Picasso
was one of the most outstanding and important artists of the 1900’s. He is best
known for his paintings. Almost every style in modern art is represented in
Picasso’s works.
Picasso
was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain as the son of an art teacher. He studied
painting from his father and his college level course of study at the academy
of arts in Madrid.
From
about 1895 to 1901, he painted realistic works in a traditional stylE. He,
then, entered what was called the Blue PerioD. During this time, he only used
shades of blue in his paintings to show the poverty he saw in Barcelona.
After
1908, he entered into the style of cubism. Among his well-known cubist
paintings are “Three Musicians” and “Man with a Guitar”.
Picasso
died in Moughins, France in 1973. He was really great artist.

Charles
Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 12, 1809. He came
from a wealthy family and never had to work. He studied medicine and theology.
In 1831 he graduated from University of Cambridge with a degree of theology.
He began
a career as a scientist quite by chancE. On December 27,1831, 22 years old
Charles Darwin joined the crew of the HMS Beagle as a naturalist.The five years
expedition collected hydrographic, geologic, and meteorologic data from South
America and many other regions around the worlD. Darwin’s own observation on
this voyage led to his theory of natural selection.
Charles
Darwin was greatly influenced by the geologist Adam Sedgwick and naturalist
John Henslow in his development of the theory of natural selection, which was
to become the foundation concept supporting the theory of evolution. Darwin’s
theory holds that environmental effects lead to varying degrees of reproductive
success in individuals and groups of organisms. Natural selection tends to
promote adaptation in organisms when necessary for survival. This revolutionary
theory was published in 1859 in Darwin’s now famous On the Origin of Species by
Means of Natural Selection.
